Projects

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A brief synopsis of some recent projects which Resco have completed is shown below.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ENGINEERING ACCEPTANCE OF CLASS 66 LOCOMOTIVES

On behalf of Direct Rail Services Limited (DRS), Resco carried out the Engineering Acceptance of Class 66 locomotives being manufactured and supplied by Electro Motive Diesel Inc. In doing so, Resco carried out Design and Construction Certification of the locomotives during the build process. This involved extensive work on-site at the EMD Facility in London, Ontario, liaising with and advising local Manufacturing, Quality and other staff.

In conjunction with DRS Engineering Staff, Resco were able to carry out a significant proportion of the overall process prior to the locomotives leaving EMD works and being delivered to th UK. This greatly reduced the volume of compliance work to be completed when the locomotives arrived in the UK and assisted DRS by ensuring that local staff were able to attend to post-delivery commissioning immediately upon arrival.

TURNKEY INSTALLATION OF OTMR SYSTEMS

Working for a number of vehicle operators, including Direct Rail Services, Arriva Trains Wales and Cotswold Rail, Resco Railways Limited have designed and installed On Train Monitoring and Recording (OTMR) systems. These systems have been designed for a wide range of vehicle types and classes, including locomotives and multiple units.

Drawing upon significant and detailed experience of rail vehicles and working closely with the vehicle fleet engineers, Resco designers developed and tailored the systems to meet both the mandatory requirements of GM/RT2472 and any additional specific operator needs. This ensured that the OTMR systems developed not only achieved the basic functionality required but also generated useful data upon which maintenance decisions and enhancements could be based. This data has been successfully used by a number of operators as the basis for changes in maintenance practise leading to significant reliability improvements.

Throughout the design process, the unique experience within Resco of mandatory standards applicable to the UK railway has been utilised to ensure that the finished systems meet all appropriate requirements. Production of detailed electrical and mechanical drawings, together with installation procedures ensured that the formally issued designs were controlled in a rigorous manner and the impact of any changes could be easily controlled and assessed. This simplified the Resco managed Engineering Acceptance process for vehicles once the systems had been installed.

Having finalised the design in accordance with the client's requirements, Resco then undertook the installation of systems on the vehicles. Working with partner organisations, installation of OTMR systems was carried out either at the client's premises or other convenient facilities as part of a wider vehicle enhancement programme. Wherever practicable the installation of the system on the first vehicle was use to optimise the modification process for the remaining fleet. This enabled significant reductions in vehicle down-time by increasing the amount of equipment that could be pre-manufactured off site and optimising the design for simplicity of installation.

RE-ENGINEERING AND RE-INTRODUCTION OF CLASS 121 'BUBBLE CAR'

On behalf of Arriva Trains Wales, Resco Railways carried out the development, design and certification of an extensive package of engineering modifications to enable a Class 121 DMU to return to service on the Cardiff Central to Cardiff Bay services. This included OTMR system, Drivers Reminder Appliance (DRA), Central Door Retention System, new fire supression system, new cabin heaters, updated cab and a number of other modifications to enable the vehicle to meet the requirements of current Railway Group Standards (RGS).

In addition, Resco provided significant technical support to ATW in order to secure a derogation for this Mark 1 vehicle to re-enter limited passenger service on this route. This, together with previous similar work carried out for Chiltern Railways Limited has assisted in the provision of suitable and affordable rolling stock for operation on areas of the National Railway Network designated as Community Railways.
